Hello!! My name is Janeal Downs.
I write YA speculative fiction. I can also be found on Twitter where I will be snooping on my top #PitchWars mentors.
I like to describe my manuscript as Avatar the Last Airbender meets The Handmaid’s Tale.
Pitch: When seventeen-year-old Istrella is granted a palace visit, she hopes to meet her maiden mother. Away from her hateful father, and enjoying palace luxuries, Istrella finds much more. Like a growing resistance against the Hives.
The Hives are made up of air elementalists who are isolated from the rest of the world (and other elementalists). The Hive’s randomly selected maidens are the only women permitted to have children.
While Istrella is the main character, the secondary main character, Nievee, has her story told simultaneously. She is a nineteen-year-old pregnant maiden. Her mother is imprisoned in the Honey Factory for illegally birthing a child. Nievee and her best friend are also in a secret, illegal relationship. Her mother and relationship fuel her to plot against the Hive.
“WHEN THE SUN SETS” includes:
Dual-POV, a friend to lovers couple, lovers to enemies couple, elemental magic, complicated family relationships, diversity, revenge plots, prisoners, rebellions, and more.
Photos that relate to the plot:
I also made a Pintrest board with more photos here!
MORE ABOUT ME:
I have a B.S. in journalism and a B.A. in Spanish from Virginia Commonwealth University. I’m currently a promotions assistant at a radio station, a technical writer, and a freelance journalist. Writing is my passion (obviously) and I love to work. By being in the communications field and having critique partners/beta readers, I’ve learned to cherish constructive criticism. I can be goofy, but I’m a hard worker, serious about improving my craft, and very deadline driven!
I switch between Ravenclaw (what I get most times) and Gryffindor, so I’ll just go by Ravendor. Also, last I checked, I was an ENFJ. Being overly empathetic is a gift and a curse (as Adrian Monk might say).
DIVERSITY is extremely important to me. I’m a book worm and a movie lover. Growing up, I didn’t see much representation, so it is important for it to be in my own work. I started crying as soon as the movie “Hidden Figures” started. It’s definitely a passionate topic for me, and not always by choice.
My favorite fictional characters:
Hermoine is me and I am Hermoine. That’s all.
Zuko was always my favorite character in Avatar. He was a complex character who could be mean, but also sweet. He had the most intriguing and relatable transformation to me as a character. Also, I loooove Dante Basco’s voice, so that helps. I also like Snape and Lana Parilla as the Evil Queen for similar reasons.
Some of my favorite books: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows (and the entire series), The Count of Monte Cristo, Mercedes Lackey’s Elemental Masters series, Memoirs of a Geisha, Marie Lu’s Legend, The Lunar Chronicles, The Uglies series, Hunger Games, Alice and Wonderland, A Series of Unfortunate Events, El Tiempo Entre Costuras, etc. etc. etc.
I love Once Upon a Time, Monk, Avatar the Last Airbender (as mentioned earlier), Jane the Virgin, Being Mary Jane, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Insecure, Agents of Shield (and most super hero shows/movies), and I do watch reality shows (don’t judge me).
Finally, I’m hoping at the end of Pitch Wars to be like:
But I’m enjoying the experience regardless!! #PitchWars
It’s my first year doing #pimpmybio! If you’re a potential mentee, you can learn more on Lana Pattinson’s blog. Thanks Lana!
